Run an entire marathon... in your own home!

November 23, 2020

Itching for a run but the enforcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) means you have to stay at home for the foreseeable future? Afraid to leave your house because the risk of contracting COVID-19 is still up in the air (no pun intended)? Fret not, for after reading this, you will be able to complete the equivalent of a full marathon (42km) from just the comfort of your own home!

A standard marathon would take an average of 59,150 steps to complete. One might ask, “how does one take so many steps just in the house compound?”. Here are some of the activities that you can do whilst at home to achieve the steps:

● Work out while watching TV

One of Malaysia’s favorite pastimes is to watch TV, be it a movie or binge-watching a new series on Netflix. So why not pair it with something healthy? Simply walking around or doing jumping jacks while the show is going on will easily contribute up to the equivalent of 5000 steps in 1 episode.

● Walk around the house before and after you eat.

Another thing Malaysians love to indulge themselves in is FOOD. Take a couple of steps around the kitchen before you open up the fridge, doing that will get you more hungry for your meal. After eating, walk a couple of rounds in your kitchen again, it not only helps with digestion but could also accumulate up to 300 steps per day!

● Going up and down a flight of stairs.

It is recommended that you take a break from computer screens every 20 minutes or so to rest your eyes and allow them to refocus, why not take that time to walk up and down the stairs? Set a timer to alert yourself to walk up and down a flight of stairs every 20 minutes. This allows you to rest your eyes as well as racking up steps on your pedometer! With enough discipline, this method can easily get you up to 2,000 steps per day.

● Doing chores

CHORES? Boring!!! Often, we have a negative perception of doing chores at home, but who said chores had to be boring? It could be made into a time-based challenge or a fun exercise to get your body moving! Bring out your inner Cinderella and sing, dance, and twirl around as you do the dishes or stuff your laundry into the washing machine.

● Games!

Aside from walking around the house, you can take out some time to play games with your loved ones! With the closure of schools and virtual learning, it is important to get your move on. Aside from spending quality time with your family members, games like tag and hide and seek can definitely get your heart pumping and rack up the step counter!

● Participate in a virtual run.

Virtual runs are an amazing way to get steps! Through virtual runs like the ones hosted by JomRun, participants can interact with other users by joining virtual runs remotely from the comfort of their own home. Aside from racking up steps, the virtual run provides gifts and achievement goodies for those who reach a step count milestone!

However, if virtual runs are not your thing, you could also join JomRuns’ challenges for free and stand a chance to win prizes from a range of products from sports brands!

Ultimately, how would you know if you’ve reached your step quota? Easy, track your steps with a fitness wearable like a Fitbit or just download a free step counter on your phone, like the one on the JomRun app! !

All the best and stay safe!
