Sitok Kuching, a three-day contemporary market, launched this December at the Kuching Waterfront.
December 17, 2019
Sitok Kuching, a marketplace to showcase modern-day Kuching’s
contemporary life, has officially made its debut in Kuching, Sarawak. From 6 to
8 Dec, the marketplace received more than 15,000 attendees at the iconic
Kuching Waterfront.
Sitok Kuching is another initiative undertaken by the Ministry that
beckons the world to visit Kuching, the Gateway to Sarawak, where there is
“More to Discover.” The three-day market is a specially curated marketplace of
creative retail offerings, performances, workshops, food, music, and
family-friendly activities made possible through the contribution of 59
creatives and independent businesses from Kuching, Sarawak and West Malaysia.
The official launch of Sitok Kuching was officiated by Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Youth and Sports, YB Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and the Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, YB Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Permanent Secretary Mr. Hii Chang Kee on 6 December at the iconic Kuching Waterfront.

Named after the Sarawakian slang meaning ‘here’, Sitok Kuching aims
to showcase Sarawak’s ‘here’ and ‘now’. In comparison with Sarawak’s previous
festivals celebrating art and culture, Sitok offers a fresh and different
perspective on Sarawak’s culture. From photographable opportunities to unique
art installations, the three-day marketplace is another opportunity to show the
world that Sarawak’s contemporary art and culture is as breathtaking as the
view from Gunung Santubong, and is as diverse as the people of Sarawak.
Sitok Kuching was housed in a vibrant, interactive and endlessly
photographable and immersive exhibit that occupied the Old Courthouse, the
Square Tower and its adjacent plaza. The Kuching Waterfront proved to be an
ideal spot on which Sitok Kuching promoted the exchange of contemporary ideas
and creativity. The Kuching Waterfront used to be a vital trading post that
connected the Sarawak hinterland with the sea. Currently, it is the
cosmopolitan heart of modern-day Kuching where community life and nightlife
intersects.
