Greening the Environment Collaboration between Department of Environment and Mondelez International ( Malaysia)

August 08, 2019

In conjunction with the World Environment Day, Department of Environment Selangor (DOE) collaborates with Mondelez International ( Malaysia) in an effort to green the environment by conducting tree planting activities at SK Seksyen 27 (1) Shah Alam.

This inaugural event between DOE and Mondelez Malaysia is in line with the 2019 World Environment Day theme which is set by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), aptly known as ‘Beat Air Pollution’. A theme that carries a clear message to all communities that all parties and individuals are instrumental in ensuring the world is healthier and better place to live in while committing to preserve nature.

Surrounded by factories, SK Seksyen 27 Shah Alam has been identified as the ideal location for this initiative in an effort to foster awareness on the importance of planting trees which could help in preventing air pollution and help improve the air quality while protecting the surrounding eco-system.

According to Tuan Haji Shafee’e bin Yasin, Director of the Selangor State Department of Environment, “We should all be vigilant to fight any environmental crimes and must report immediately to DOE or any other agencies such as Shah Alam City Council for any action contributing to environmental pollution”.

“We should always work hand in hand with government agencies and take steps to make World Environment Day a meaningful day to preserve the environment. At the state level, this time around we are pleased to be working with Mondelez International (Malaysia) to help create a cleaner environment”.

Apart from raising awareness on conservation and protection responsibilities of the environment, World Environment Day is also aimed at encouraging the involvement of the public especially school students in an effort to cultivate the love for the environment, especially in conservation programs in line with World Environment Day’s goal.

Raja Zalina binti Raja Safran, Head of Corporate and Government Affairs of Mondelez explains "This collaboration with the Department of Environment is very much anticipated in pursuit of Mondelez's global aspiration to reduce environmental impact on our activities. We have been diligently executing initiatives in every market we operate in namely, reducing the impact of pollution. We also aim to stay at the forefront of the fight against climate change by setting science-based targets to reduce CO2 emissions from our own manufacturing”.

The tree planting program is also a continuation of one of Mondelez International's initiatives in cultivating the spirit among employees to love the environment. Plantation Plus, is an initiative undertaken by the employees as they are invited to donate or plant a tree in a suitable area such as at work area, at home or within their community. This is in line with the tagline - One Tree, One Employee, Every Year. This year, all Mondelez companies in Asia, Middle East and African (AMEA) continent are aiming to plant more than 6500 trees altogether.

Raja Zalina further added "As a leading snack company in the world, whatever we do we will refer to our company's leading strategy which is ‘Snacking Made Right’. It is a catalyst for us to make the right snack, for the right moment and made with the right way. So, when referring to the right way, we will continue to play a significant role towards reducing our environmental impact”.
