WHAT A DAY FOR THE COMMUNITY: CITTA Mall Gives Back With A Run, A Preloved Store, And Plenty Of Cookies

November 11, 2019

It was a meaningful Saturday as I join some of the runners for Run For A Chance 2019.  The run receives a lot of support from the runners and their families by giving their encouragement to the disabled runners.

Giving encourages dialogue between people and communities in ways that many of us would not have ordinarily experienced before. When we choose to give, we often unite with people from all walks of life for a common cause. At CITTA Mall, three charity activities-a charity run, a cookie baking workshop, and the launch of a Celebrity Preloved Store--that took place all on the same day on November 9 bore witness to the adage that Malaysians have a generous loving heart.

This is the third consecutive year Lovely Disabled Home has organized the run to promote social inclusion amongst the public and persons with disability (PWD) as well as to raise funds for the home. Some 1,500 runners took part in the charity run on Saturday and the home successfully raised close to RM120,000 to defray the home’s operational cost for next year. I am proud of the society that we as Malaysian really care for each other.

The run’s chairperson Tan Mei Jiun said the run also saw 130 PWD taking part compared to the 50 in the previous year. She thanked all the participants, volunteers and sponsors including CITTA Mall for making this run a success. Among the VIPs present were Bandar Utama assemblywoman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, Kampung Tunku assemblywoman Lim Yi Wei, and Damansara MP Tony Pua. Jamaliah commended the organizer for holding the run while Lim was heartened to see there were many runners participating in the run together with the PWD. “This is indeed a meaningful event as it helps create awareness on the importance of social inclusion amongst the public and PWD,” expressed Lim. The ‘Run for A Chance’ 2019 Charity Run comprised of two running categories, namely the 3km run and 10km run. Every runner who completed the run was awarded a medal. Other activities that were held alongside the run include special performances by members of the Lovely Disabled Home and two lucky draw sessions.

The Official Launch of CITTA Mall’s Celebrity Preloved Store

Conceived as a pragmatic option for NGOs to raise funds for their worthy cause, the Celebrity Preloved Store was officially launched after several months of trial runs. It is a collaboration between PPDK Rumah Sayangku Teluk Panglima Garang (PPDK), CITTA Mall and the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) to equip physically or mentally challenged children with the skills they require to raise funds for themselves through the proceeds of sales at the Preloved Store. CITTA Mall’s Celebrity Preloved Store is currently manned by teachers from PPDK, which runs a community-based rehabilitation program for 50 physically or mentally challenged children. The eventual plan would entail using the shop as a training ground for their students to practice what they have learned through their training programs. PPDK is also one of the ten NGOs supported by PAM as part of the institute’s CSR initiatives. In his speech, Khairulnizam bin Azman, Chairman of PPDK conveyed his gratitude to CITTA Mall and PAM for their support and contributions towards the center's rehabilitation programmes. The launching ceremony saw Abu Zarim Abu Bakar, Deputy President of PAM and Mabel Huang, Executive, Advertising & Promotions of CITTA Mall affixing their respective organization logos on the wall of Preloved Store as official collaborators of PPDK Rumah Sayangku's endeavors. Apart from the items donated by celebrities like Baki Zainal, Amber Chia, Adibah Noor, Rejuvenate Dance Crew, the Preloved Store also carries handicraft products made by the center’s students. Proceeds of the sale of items in the Preloved Store are channeled to support PPDK’s rehabilitation programs.

Cookie Baking Workshop with the Leo Club of Bandar Utama 3

On the same day, the Leo Club of Bandar Utama 3 (BU3) collaborated with CITTA Mall to organize a cookie baking workshop to raise funds for its community service projects. The cookie baking workshop, which involved the participation of more than 10 Leo members, received a good response from shoppers at the mall and managed to raise a total amount of RM1,500.

More than 30 shoppers comprising of adults and children had participated in the workshop. The freshly baked cookies were sold to the shoppers for RM10 a packet. The President of the Leo Club of BU3 Charlene Fan said she was thankful that CITTA Mall has been supportive of the club’s initiative to raise funds to reach out to the underprivileged. “We realized that our community service projects have been a hit at CITTA Mall, particularly among the families who frequent it, so we are grateful that the mall has been empathetic towards our cause,” said Charlene. On the mall’s charitable efforts, CITTA Mall Advertising & Promotions Assistant Manager Allison Chan said CITTA Mall is always supportive of the less fortunate and is open to be the venue host of other charitable events throughout the year. “We have seen the work Lovely Disabled Home is doing for its members as well as the altruistic enthusiasm among Leo members, so we’re proud to be the nucleus for both organizations to converge on when it comes to community service,” expressed Chan. Meanwhile, on the official launch of the Celebrity Preloved Store, Chan said that it will serve as a platform for disabled members to acquire the necessary skills to become more independent. “We believe this will eventually help instill the self-confidence they need to navigate a life of independence” added Chan.
